The Fitness Program is for people of all ages and levels that want to take advantage of the fitness benefits of martial arts without studying the applied techniques as such. Training cardio, strength, speed, power, balance, agility, coordination, stamina, control, determination, focus, discipline and sense development training. The time it takes to complete the Fitness Program is different for each individual, it is possible for someone to complete it in 10 weeks but it could take someone else 5 years. Once you have completed all 10 levels of the Fitness Program you will be required to pass a written exam. If successful, you will now be a MAF Instructor.
The Self Defence Program is a collection of techniques and tactics that are designed to keep you safe and on the right side of the law. It has been put together for people who do not have the time or physical ability to train a martial art but want to learn how to defend themselves. The focus is survival, the methods you train are either used to avoid, de-escalate, neutralize or escape the threat as fast as possible. There are 6 phases of learning and each must be trained for the minimum of 8 hours over a month before grading and then moving to the next phase, making this a 6 month process. Once completed you will be a SDI Grade 5.
To study an Individual Art is a more specialized approach that suits people if there is only one or two arts they are interested in or they already have qualifications in some of the arts in The System. Each art has great things to offer: Wing Chun improves trapping and line familiarization, Shaolin improves strength and hard conditioning, Taijiquan improves sensitivity and proper alinement of structure, Qin Na improves grappling and knowledge of anatomy etc. Everything is still taught with the Practical Combat Methods approach, quickly teaching people the most useful elements of an art so that they can develop the skills necessary to apply it in violent encounters. The duration is different for each of the arts (please enquire for details) but each will lead to a range of Instructor Level Qualifications.
Studying Traditional Weapon disciplines are an option that appeals to those who want to get into weapon fighting, those that want to walk in the footsteps of ancient warriors or those that want to learn specific attributes / skills. For instance, the Long Staff greatly improves stability and grip strength, the Double Sticks improve coordination and footwork, the Nunchaku improve tactile sensitivity and timing, the Double Daggers improve hand speed and accuracy etc. Each of the weapons takes anywhere from 6 months to a year of constant practice to grade through Basic, Intermediate and Advanced to finally reach Instructor level. It is permitted to study more than one weapon at a time.
An option to study Improvised Weapons is available to those interested for the purposes of self defence or to further their martial arts training. Anyone wishing to take this option must first either complete the Self Defence Program, pass an Instructor grade in an Individual Art or an Instructor grade in a Traditional Weapon discipline (Over 18`s only). The Improvised Weapons and Defensive Tactics Program has 8 phases of training that once completed you will be a Tier 1 IWDT Instructor.
To study the combined system or 'The System' as it is most commonly called, will give you the complete picture of Martial Arts as a whole, and is suited to anyone who wishes to study all of the above. There is a lot of material to wrap your head around, techniques to learn, mental/physical attributes to develop. fitness tests to pass, principles/concepts to understand and apply. It is a process that cannot be rushed, there will be regular gradings but what is expected to pass each of them is more than simply regurgitating information and demonstrating techniques. You will be thoroughly tested. The process is designed to make you a good all rounder, capable of fighting people of any style/background. This is what is taught as our public Class Curriculum but some people also opt to train this privately on a 1 to 1 basis to accelerate their learning.
